“I want my life to make a difference. I want my life to make a change.”

I Want to Make a Difference - Lyrics by Rachel Kurtz

  • Designed to further the legacy of Pastor John Hogenson, an exemplary life-long student of leadership, pastor, family man, and friend.

  • Pastor John Hogenson had been leading three of the largest evangelical Lutheran congregations in the country, then tragedy struck his life. He was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

Intensely inspired by Leadership principles, John lived his life with unbelievable care and compassion for all God’s people, but always strived for us to “be our best selves”.

John said “I’m more interested in the living process than the dying process,” but he set an example for both.

John’s legacy is forever moving forward through the lives he touched. He taught us to listen to God and experience His majesty in amazing ways and to “be our best” by supporting others.

  • The Hogenson Institute was the absolute spiritual highlight of my life. Of course, there was the beauty and wonder of God's creation, but so much more. The diverse group of participants all brought something unique and spiritual that made for engaging and deep discussions. The leaders brought thoughtful Bible stories, artistic pieces, and a deep sense of calm and of being truly at peace. I reflect often on the experience and happily recall the lessons, the personal growth, and the genuine spirituality from that week.

  • Some days you just need to pause to catch your breath before moving on. And then there are seasons when you need to step away entirely, disconnect, refresh, and recalibrate.

The invitation to attend the first Hogenson Institute event caught me at a time when I really needed to step away. There’s a lot of “pouring oneself out” in ministry, but from start to finish our time together was an experience of being poured into. The fact that this entire trip was a gift left me feeling loved and valued. Times of conversation and laughter with old colleagues and new friends restored my joy.

Our time with Todd Bolsinger gave language to what I’d been experiencing in ministry. Horseback riding, a mountain walk, chapel time, fly fishing and some incredible food left me feeling grateful to be alive. And doing it all in John’s memory just multiplied the meaning of the whole event. I continue to be grateful for the experience!
